Dear member of the MFI/IEE Munich e-mail list,
Please note that the deadline for registering for this event is today.
We need another 3 participants to make the event viable.
Best wishes, Alan Teale
Chairman, IET Germany Network

“The interrogation of fibre optic sensors”, technical talk by Dr David
Norman IET on Friday 17th November at 7pm at the Unionsbräu,
Einsteinstraße, Munich.
The talk itself is free and open to anyone, irrespective of whether they
are MFI/IEE members or not. To attend the event you need to register
with Alan Teale by Friday 10th November, also indicating whether you
wish to
join us for dinner afterwards in our own private room. Further details
are given below. Places are limited to 20, so first come, first served!
Description of the talk
The function of any type of sensor system is to accurately interpret the
condition of the sensed measurand. Fibre optic sensor systems exploit
changes in the intensity, phase, wavelength or polarisation of light,
which is also used as the information carrier. The talk will be a
tutorial on optical sensing technologies including:
- - an introduction on fibre optic sensing (advantages, disadvantages and
applications)
- - fibre Bragg grating sensors
- - interferometric sensors
- - low-coherence interferometry
- - fibre optic sensor interrogation using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer
- - interrogation of fibre optic sensors using wavelength division
multiplexers
- - interrogation of fibre optic sensors using acousto-optic tuneable
filters.
The speaker
David Norman was born in 1964 and grew up in Solihull near Birmingham.
He started working life at the age of 16 as an apprentice toolmaker -
initially with Parker Hale Ltd. and later with Toolcraft Engineering. He
moved to London in 1986 and started a new career with British Telecom
where he stayed until 1997. At the age of 33 he decided to go to
university to further his career prospects and enrolled at Aston
University, commencing his studies in October 1997. By 2002 he had
successfully gained an MEng first class honours in Electronics Systems
Engineering. After completing his degree he continued at Aston
University in the Photonics Research Group studying for a PhD in optical
fibre sensing. He was awarded his doctorate in June this year, the same
month that he moved to Munich with his wife.
Event programme
19:00 Setting up, drinks can be ordered from the waiters
19:20 Beginning of talk
20:30 Discussion
